Community Paint-a-Long (Ends Mar'15): 'Elite'

Postby mcfonz » Mon Jan 05, 2015 6:55 pm

It was suggested that for this year we think of paint a longs with simple themes with multiple possible interpretations. So to kick the year off for the usual paint a longs we are going to use the title 'elite'.

Any which way you chose to interpret this word in miniature form is fine. Examples may include a unit of elite troops, an elite vehicle like a WW2 Tiger, a mounted hero, special forces or just a Victorian gentleman with an heir of snootyness about him.

This one starts today and will go on for two months until Saturday 7th March. :D

I'll join this one too. Being that I'm going to enter a conversion of a lawmaster into the GW paint-a-long, I guess that it makes sense entering here with its rider, a Judge (an elite cop, isn't it?).

Oh yes, the Judges are most definitely Elite. And anyway, it's your interpretation of elite so it's fine.

I'll start the ball rolling posting a pic of the mini I'm going to use as the base for my conversion of a Judge (who I may or may not name Dredd).

Image

It's a prosthene marine from the Syntha faction of the Void 1.1 game. It's one of the few out of production minis from that game, since the older ones are still sold by Scotia Grendel, and the newer ones are part of the Urban War game by Urban Mammoth. But this mini is, as far as I know, from a "generation" in-between the transition from Void to Urban War, and are very rare to come across (I got a bunch from a LAFer). So I'm going to butcher a rare mini.

Conversion wise, I need to transform his rifle into a gun. I'll get rid of the stock/butt, and shorten the barrel (and reconstruct the muzzle). Then I'll decapitate him, and use one of those new Puppet Wars heads.

The paintjob will be based on the 2012 Dredd movie (black, with golden accents on the shoulders, and red on the helmet).

looks like a good base for your judge, for sure. Definitely will watch this one.. curious to see how the gun swap goes, especially the butt/stock.. those are hard sometimes.

Grimdalf from Hasslefree and a limited edition dwarf from wargames foundry.

They are to be the older, more wisened dwarfs in my adventuring party. One a wandering wizard who has mysteriously decided to join the group along with his owl, Gertrude - or Gerty for short.

The other is a merchant who is in it purely for the money. He carries an axe which is more of a hatchet. The others don't think he's up for much in terms of fighting but he balances the books and keeps a note of their treasure haul.

Been waiting for these to come out in metal. :)

Nice work! 8)

Where the hell is Artemis these days anyway? Decided the Platypus isn't cool enough for him in his new role as wargames magnate? ;)

Nice work, gi6ers. :)

I am starting on a Nobz mob for 40K 2nd edition. It will be joined by a Warboss as well, which I haven't primed yet.

Cheers. I have actually painted the other ones for the other thread, but I will post up a photo after I have done the varnish (2 days or so).

The squig is Gobbla from the Skarsnik and Gobbla pack (no idea if it's still available), Skarsnik being a night goblin special character. This is an old metal that came in an eBay job lot. It will be red, but I am experimenting doing a pre shade with blue wash.....

Awesome, Can't wait to see how those orcs turn out!
No longer available in that form, but there is a new version of Gobbla and Skarsnik which is still cracking IMO

@Gi6ers - Nice work on Sterling and 'Man-hands' :D

Here is the boss, primed and messy bits half done. I try to do anything that needs drybrushing, ie the base, or ink washes, ie the skin, first. I do the base coat of the skin then do everything else, then last of all I do the highlights on the skin. I know many people paint the face first, but for me I paint it last and I find the mini comes to life at that last point when the face is finished. Just how I do it. :)

oooh, I'm curious to see where you go with the green armour on these. They going to get your normal light/bone highlighting treatment? or something murkier/dirtier?

Might get a bit more brown in there to suggest they are well worn though, veterans of may campaigns with the 5th Border Legion!
