Community Paint-a-Long: 2015 Company Series Calendar

Postby mcfonz » Mon Dec 29, 2014 2:42 pm

Some of you will be aware that in 2014 a group of us started to do what have become known as Community Paint-a-Long's. The idea of which are to help motivate each other to continue painting when our painting 'mojo's' are a bit stuck. It's not about how well you paint, it's about getting down to painting, asking each other about techniques and essentially having a bit of discussion whilst we get on with it.

Think of it like a virtual painting table which we are all sitting around, chilling and painting miniatures whilst sharing what we are doing.

After a number of these dead-lined projects, the idea was born to do around 6 company based projects a year, in an effort to introduce people to new companies and miniatures that perhaps they hadn't painted before. Or just to push people in different directions to try and keep us all 'fresh' so to speak. A poll was formed here: http://www.randomplatypus.com/forum/vie ... f=4&t=1186. And after a Shed housed die off we were left with the following:

Hasslefree, Fenris, Statuesque, Crooked Dice, Red Box Games, Reaper Miniatures.

I also made the decision to throw Games Workshop in to be the first Company based paint-a-long simply due to the short notice and that nearly everyone has a GW mini somewhere in the back of their lead/plastic/resin piles.

I shall update this thread with dates for each one as I organise them - the first being Games Workshop.

No problem. I have sent off pm's and emails to said companies. Some have already got back to me so I will hopefully be able to start adding dates for different projects soon enough.

Some of them may even be hinting at releases although we won't know for sure. It's worth noting . . . .

Right, so I have now heard back from: Fenris, Hasslefree, Statuesque and RBG. So I am thinking, slam Reaper in as the 2nd company paint along followed by Hasslefree.

In theory, with the every other month thing. That should lead us up to Salute. Which for those of you not in the UK, is a big deal over here and a lot of folk attend. So it will give people a chance to pick up harder to get models there for them. It also means that state side, you have a few months to browse and order anything from the UK - or perhaps ask one of those going to Salute nicely to buy things for you and send it in one parcel. :D

As a longer term project, I have found step by step paints very useful in that they show what it looks like at various stages. How about a paint along where we all do the same figure and one of our better exponents takes us through it stage by stage.

Actually I quite like that.

So we could call it something like Community Paint-a-Long: OSL / NMM? And then get someone or some folk who can do those to demonstrate with a step by step and the rest of us follow and put up our efforts?

Can I update that in the first post, or is it not definite yet?

And also, since we're doing 7, are we going to keep with every other month and stretch it into 2016?, or have three in back-to-back months?

Jan-Feb-Mar-May-July-Sept-Nov ? ( I vote for this, cause I get more painting done in the winter anyway, but I'll go with the flow. :) )

or

Jan Mar May July Sept Nov Jan ?

That's a great idea, I was actually just looking at lilly poots but the thought of having to do OSL kinda put me off even though it's a great mini, but I wouldn't mind giving it a try in a paint a long

Also - if any folk are looking at these miniatures for the first time and wondering where to buy them from then please ask.

For reaper in the UK I have always used http://miniature-heroes.co.uk/

Perhaps some of those stateside will know where to order some of the UK stuff from.

I order HF from HF, Statuesque from Statuesque, and Fenris from Fenris. I've never bought Crooked Dice stuff before, but I'll probably order it from Crooked Dice, if I decide to get something. :)

Fantization and War Store both carry a lot of the european lines, but they're both generally super slow on the turn around (and often even though something is listed as in stock, once you order it they tell you that its out, and that they have to order it from the UK anyway, so It'll actually take longer to have it routed through a middle man than it would to have it shipped direct to me), and I get shit directly from the aforementioned UK concerns consistently pretty quickly.

Right, so I'm thinking of single word titles that can be as open to interpretation as you like. It reminds me a bit of art projects at school but thinking on it has helped a bit.

I'm thinking for the first couple of normal paint a longs being along the lines of light and then dark. Examples could be painting a model or models with a dark / subdued pallet. Or you could see dark as evil and so paint a character reflecting that. Or an assassin etc. It's nice and open.

For terrain I am thinking of similar. I'm thinking the first could be 'stonework'. So anything that features some form of stone. You might decide for small field boundry walls, full on fortifications or rocky outcrops etc.

All sounds good to me!
Just to be clear - will the themed paintalongs be combined with the manufacturer ones (eg Fenris - Darkness, Reaper - Winter) or a separate affair?
Sorry if I'm being stupid!

Separate. We'll see how it goes, if it's too much going on at once we'll change it but hopefully the overlaps will allow folk engage with as many or as few as they like.

I will certainly try to take part in this. Always good to try out new companies and painting the odd different miniature as a side to a longer running project can stop you getting burnt out, I find. :)
