Community terrain build-a-long 1 (Dec'14): Anything goes!

Postby mcfonz » Wed Oct 08, 2014 11:44 pm

"Why not do a terrain paint-a-long?"

Well why not indeed. As this is the first, the only limitations is going to be the deadline. We're going to go for Sunday 7th December 2014.

So, get building and posting photo's of what you are doing! Whether it be ancient abodes, medieval houses or sci fi scatter terrain - it's all game!

I can't tackle either of my substantial 'next' terrain projects in this time frame, but I have a minor one I can do, and I'll try my best!

Thanks McF!

I've got a thingy somewhere in the post, it's sort of to go with the big project but I might not finish that in the time so I'll do the little thingy.

Only thing I'm going to be building in the near future is the table for Salute and I'll be lucky if that's finished by April, let alone December the 7th!

I should have some scenery arriving from the Mars Attacks kick starter arriving soon. It would be good to get that finished by Dec 7th.

So there are no moveable bits of scatter terrain to go with the table then?

Good point. There might be. Still not sure what will be done in time though :)

Ok - so fingers crossed, having now moved and got most of the hard stuff out of the way I should be able to knock up something in the time frame.

I was inspired by this:
Image
By Soldado - I should say that it's the terrain piece in the background that is the inspiration for this piece.

The reason being is that I had some parts left from an old computer that I had kept with the idea of turning into something terrain wise. I've had them for a few years. So cobbled with some other bits here is what I thought:

Parts:

Concept 1:

Concept 2:

I'm currently preferring the first one, but fell like I need to add to it yet. I have some of Phil's (slug industries) sci fi detailing bits so will use those to add detail. I'm thinking that this could be an air cleaning tower or atmosphere processor etc.

In the far future there are giant heat sinks and signal attenuators. ;)

I like the heatsink idea a lot, Fonz. Excited to see what you do.

For me, my contribution will likely either be just some simple treasure/objective marker piles, or maybe some stone walls. Nothing fancy at all, but I aim to finish something for one of these x-alongs one of these days, so . . . small steps. ;)

And indeed it does! Go for it!

Update:

Basic structure built. Access and maintenance platform added to the back. Straws are not glued yet, I'm going to play around with bit's and pieces - dry fitting where possible to see how it looks. Quite enjoying this so far, more to do tonight.

I have some small projects lined up - and am keenly aware I've been beavering away at my projects and putting them on frothers (but not here , too lazy to post on 2 forums)... In short, I'm in.

Now it's starting to take the shape of a scenery piece and not just some junk. :thumb:

That's looking pretty awesome. Love the railing and all the additional pipestraws ! Going to be a great piece, McFonz.

I've built this from some modular scenery I got from Mantic's Mars Attacks Kickstarter. The system is very similar to the Deadzone scenery they have been producing.

Looks like I have a lot of work ahead of me with filler and green stuff to try and disguise all those connector holes and the joins between the panels. They didn't seem to matter so much on the sci-fi stuff but they just look out of place on "real world" buildings.
