SELWG 22nd Oct 2017

Postby Paul Newman's Ghost » Thu Sep 29, 2016 11:53 am

Last year's SELWG was low key. This year's will probably be worse.

Anyone else going to bother? Who can I fail to say "hi" to this year?

You've really sold that one to me.
I'll hop on a plane and fly over.
Just for the day and then fly home again, just in time for tea.

Balsa wood gliders can get across the Atlantic with no problems, right?

It's still a bigger, better show than some. And it does have the large SELWG B&Buy that used to be at Salute. And it's not too far from me. And Dave T owes me money. So I'll be there tomorrow.

But it used to be about half as good as Salute. And now it's down to around 30%.

Will be there with a Texan War of Independence demo, just sorting out the boxes now.

As a show, it’s fine. From a setting up/packing away perspective it could do with a better venue but I’ve always enjoyed it.

I'll be there with my club for the last chance to see our game Fenris Descending.

I'll try to seek you both out and then not talk to you again like I usually do.

I've never managed this one despite it being just under a couple of hours away, typically decide to go next year then someone tells me how awful it was so I give it a miss, deciding perhaps to go the following year, ad infinitum...

I can’t say I’d have regarded any SELWGs in the past 29 years as ‘awful’

Justified win as Best of Show Germy, it looked great.

Mission accomplished? I spoke to a fair few folks but can’t recall a good looking pale figure with a blue-eyed head under his arm.

Yeah, it's not that bad. Just tends to disappoint in one way or another every year. This year traders were down in numbers, there were gaps. Cafe was open this year but had almost no chairs and tables, and I'd brought my own food and drink anyway, just in case it was closed again.

Yup, agreed.

Didn't actually speak to you. Spoke to Germy but it was his fault, he spoked first.

I’m best admired from a distance.

I think SELWG might have fallen prey to a boredom factor + the venue has problems from a loading/unloading perspective. This year’s train station closures won’t have helped. A change of venue might well revitalise the show - but that can be fraught as Derby showed. Still, I’m looking forward to next year.

Never been to SELWG or Derby but as a complete outsider, if you are going to take on a show called Derby Worlds or whatever it is, and then move it to somewhere that distinctly isn't Derby, you have already taken a step into the world of trouble.

It's why MK Dons remain to be a laughing stock to most English footy fans. MK - yes, Dons? Nope.

Well Derby was recently held in Donnington Race Track, I guess you hold onto the name as it’s a key part of your publicity. Donnington rather screwed the organisers by cancelling their booking rather abruptly so they needed to find a venue quickly. Their problem is that they’ve booked for 3 years and that venue does have issues.

It does make me value Excel and the Newark Showground.

I think places like Excel are one offs, you really have to have an incredibly popular show to access that level of venue. That said, it also has it's issues. In terms of food there isn't anything cheap and cheerful nearby at all unless you find your way out of Excel itself and to the tesco express that is hidden up in the shops nearby.

Good venues are hard to come by, especially at the last minute.

All those years living in Blighty and I never went to SELWG.
I regret that now.

Then again, I never tried Jellied Eels either. And that was probably a good thing.

Cheers, and it wasn't my fault. I mistook you for a normal punter who desperately needed to know what the robots were made out of
