TBH I'd be really worried but I absolutely loved Arrival and every other movie Denis Villeneuve has made so far so I'm really curious what he can do with this one

I'm at least encouraged that Ridley Scott and Harrison Ford are in the mix...

I'm not familliar with any of Villeneuve's work, but Sicario and Arrival have been on my list to investigate. Will probably see it. Or, wait for Artemis to trash it first, then decide. ;)

I'm more optimistic because gosling is leading - has that guy made a bad film?
Brave you all!

gangster squad wasn't great but I have to agree that for the most part he's picked pretty good movies to be in

Oh he has been in some really quite badly panned movies, but the better ones seem to stick out more - that always helps. Plus people seem to like him, which in itself helps people to like his movies. A bit like McConananananananauaghaay - yeah, that guy.

Anyway, so far, looks good. He has the right sort of look for the role IMHO. As long as they don't go all explosions and silliness and retain it's almost bite-able atmosphere along with completely drowning you in imagery then it should be good.

The issue a lot of movies like this face, and where Lucas failed with the silly star wars trilogy with too much CGI, is that we have seen the worlds/universes already. We know what to expect in that regard - which means they have to not only deliver it, but add to it. And by that I mean not better it. It doesn't need to be better, much like Aliens to Alien, it can be different . . . . if it is done in the right way.

Oooh, that gave me shivers. A friend of mine has read the script and he says it's good.

There are actually three mini short movies that have been made to bridge the time between the original movie and the latest one. It's been suggested that these should be watched prior to the movie but I guess will be just as useful after viewing [edit; apologies, I see TG posted the middle one already]:
